Es wurde als Soft Fork ausgerollt, sodass Nodes, die nie aktualisiert haben, der Kette weiter folgten. Zwei Folgen sind wichtig. Die erste ist die Behebung der Transaktionsmalleabilität: Vor SegWit konnte ein Dritter die Kodierung einer Signatur ändern und damit die Kennung einer Transaktion verändern, ohne sie ungültig zu machen, was jedes Protokoll auf Basis unbestätigter Transaktionskennungen brüchig machte. Erst die Beseitigung dieses Hindernisses machte Zahlungskanäle und damit Lightning praktikabel. Die zweite ist Kapazität. SegWit ersetzte die starre Blockgrößengrenze durch ein Gewichtsmaß, das Witness-Daten rabattiert, sodass ein Block spürbar mehr Transaktionen fasst als zuvor und eine Transaktion, die SegWit-Outputs ausgibt, günstiger zu senden ist als eine gleichwertige alte. Deshalb taucht die Wahl auf Ihrer Rechnung auf: Börsen und Wallets, die native SegWit-Adressen mit dem Präfix bc1q verwenden, zahlen in der Regel geringere Gebühren als solche, die noch Legacy-Outputs ausgeben, und manche geben die Differenz weiter. Der praktische Vorbehalt ist Kompatibilität.
