The words were chosen so that the first four letters identify each one uniquely, which is why some devices ask only for the opening letters and why a slightly misspelt word can often still be resolved. The phrase also carries a checksum, so a single altered word will usually fail validation rather than silently open a different wallet — a safeguard against typing mistakes, not against a phrase someone substituted. Word lists exist for several languages, and a phrase generated from one list will not restore in a wallet expecting another, which is a common cause of a correct-looking phrase failing.
