Here is where the rest of the cost hides, and how to measure it.","market-literacy","2026-08-17T16:27:44+00:00","
Most people compare exchanges on the headline trading fee and stop there. That number is usually the smallest cost in the transaction. The expensive parts are quieter, and they show up in places the fee schedule does not label as a fee at all.

Maker and taker

Exchanges normally charge two rates. A taker fee applies when your order fills immediately against an existing order; a maker fee applies when your order sits on the book and someone else fills it. Maker fees are lower because your order added liquidity. Placing a limit order slightly away from the current price rather than a market order is the simplest way to pay the lower of the two.

The spread

The spread is the gap between the best buying price and the best selling price. It is a real cost even though no line item names it: buy and immediately sell, and you are down by the spread before any fee applies. On thin markets and unusual trading pairs, the spread can dwarf the stated trading fee. Simple "buy crypto" widgets aimed at beginners often carry very wide spreads with a low or zero advertised fee.

Deposit, withdrawal and network fees

Moving money in and out is where costs concentrate. Card deposits often cost several percent; bank transfers are usually cheaper or free. Withdrawal fees vary enormously between exchanges for the exact same transfer, because the exchange sets its own charge on top of the network fee. Where a coin exists on several networks, choosing the cheaper network for a withdrawal can change the cost by an order of magnitude — as long as the receiving side supports that network.

Conversion and inactivity

Converting between currencies inside an exchange usually carries a worse rate than trading the same pair on the order book. Some platforms also charge inactivity fees or minimum balances. Both are disclosed, and both are easy to miss.

The bottom line

Judge cost per round trip, not per trade: deposit, buy, sell and withdraw a small amount, then compare what you got back with what you put in.
