Block Reward

infrastructure

The block reward is the new coin paid to whoever produces a valid block, the main way fresh supply enters circulation and security is funded.

Definition

The block reward is the newly issued coin a proof-of-work miner or proof-of-stake validator receives for adding a valid block, and it is the main channel through which new supply enters circulation. On Bitcoin this reward, also called the block subsidy, is cut in half at each halving until issuance ends and transaction fees alone must pay for security. Block producers normally also keep the fees paid by transactions in their block, and on some networks a further share of value comes from how transactions are ordered. Block rewards align incentives: honest production pays continuously, while attacking the chain risks forfeiting that income and the hardware or stake behind it.
