Digital Asset

Fundamentals

A digital asset is any blockchain-recorded item of value, from coins and stablecoins to tokens and NFTs, controlled through cryptographic keys.

Definition

A digital asset is any item of value that exists in digital form and can be owned, transferred or traded. In crypto the term works as a broad umbrella covering coins such as bitcoin, stablecoins, governance and utility tokens, NFTs and tokenised versions of traditional instruments. Regulators and companies often prefer digital asset, or the near-synonym virtual asset, over cryptocurrency because many of these instruments are not used as money at all. What unites them is that ownership is recorded on a shared ledger and controlled by cryptographic keys rather than by a registrar. The label itself says nothing about quality, backing or legal status: two digital assets on the same chain can carry completely different rights and risks.
