Satoshi

A satoshi is the smallest unit of bitcoin the protocol can record: one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin, or 0.00000001 BTC. Balances and fees are handled internally in satoshis rather than in whole coins, which is why a wallet can send an amount far smaller than one bitcoin and why network fees are usually quoted in satoshis per virtual byte. The unit is named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Because the division is fixed by the protocol, the number of satoshis in a bitcoin never changes, however the price moves.
