Stablecoin Reserve Composition

Reserve composition describes what actually backs a fiat-referenced stablecoin: bank deposits, short-term government bills, repurchase agreements, money-market fund shares, commercial paper, or other instruments. Composition matters because it determines how quickly reserves can be turned into cash without loss. Short-dated government securities and insured deposits behave differently from longer-duration or credit-sensitive assets during a wave of redemptions, and large uninsured balances at a single bank concentrate counterparty exposure. Issuers publish breakdowns with varying detail and frequency, and definitions are not standardised across the market. Reading a reserve report therefore means checking asset types, maturities, custodians, and the date of the snapshot rather than only the headline total.
