Token Unlock
FundamentalsA token unlock releases previously vested tokens into circulation; the schedule matters because it adds supply that holders may or may not sell.
Definition
A token unlock is the moment a vesting schedule releases a previously locked allocation to its owner, who can then move, use or sell it. Unlocks may arrive as a single large cliff release or as small recurring tranches, and most projects publish a calendar so the market can see them in advance. Because an unlock increases circulating supply, traders watch these dates closely, though whether price reacts depends on how large the release is relative to daily trading volume and on whether recipients actually choose to sell. Unlocked does not mean sold. Reading an unlock calendar alongside circulating and maximum supply gives a clearer picture of a token's supply outlook than headline market capitalisation alone.
