How to Check a Crypto Address Before You Send
A crypto transfer cannot be recalled, and the most common way people lose money is sending to an address that was never the one they meant. Here is the check that catches it.
Blockchain transfers are final. There is no chargeback, no support desk that can reverse one, and no requirement that an address belong to anybody in particular. That makes the moment you paste a destination address the single riskiest step in owning crypto.
How addresses get swapped
Malware that watches the clipboard replaces a copied address with the attacker's own, betting you will not read what you pasted. Address poisoning works differently: the attacker sends you a tiny or zero-value transfer from an address whose first and last characters match one you have used, so that a later copy from your transaction history picks up theirs. Both attacks target the same habit — checking only the beginning and end of a long string.
The check that works
Compare the whole address, not the first four and last four characters. Read it in chunks against the source you trust, or paste it into a text field and compare visually side by side. Where the destination supports it, use a name or identifier the network verifies rather than a raw string. Always copy from the withdrawal page of the receiving service, never from a chat message, an email or your own transaction history.
Check the network too
The same address format is used by several networks, and sending an asset over a network the recipient does not support is a common way to lose it. Confirm the network on both sides, and check that the asset you are sending is the one the deposit address expects.
Send a test transaction
For any transfer you would mind losing, send a small amount first, wait for it to arrive and be credited, then send the rest. The fee on the test is the cheapest insurance in crypto. On networks that require a memo or tag, the test also proves you filled that field correctly — a deposit without one can take weeks of support to recover, if it is recoverable at all.
Key takeaway
The bottom line
Verify the full address, confirm the network, and prove the route with a small transfer before you commit the balance.
