Crypto Remittance

DeFi

Sending money across borders with stablecoins: how the on-ramp, blockchain transfer and local payout stages shape cost, speed and risk.

Definition

Crypto remittance means using digital assets, most often stablecoins, to send money across borders to family or suppliers instead of a traditional wire or money-transfer operator. A typical flow has three stages: an on-ramp in the sending country, a blockchain transfer, and an off-ramp or local cash payout at the destination. The blockchain leg is usually fast and inexpensive, so most of the real cost and delay sits in the ramps and in the exchange-rate spread applied at each end. Users also carry price risk while value sits in a volatile asset, and face local rules on foreign exchange, licensing, and tax that differ by country and can change with little notice.
