Limit Order

Trading & Markets

A limit order buys or sells crypto only at your chosen price or better, giving price control but no guarantee the order is ever filled.

Definition

A limit order is an instruction to buy or sell a crypto asset only at a specified price or better, never worse. A buy limit executes at your limit price or lower; a sell limit executes at your limit price or higher. Because the exchange will not fill it outside that boundary, a limit order gives you price control but no guarantee of execution: if the market never reaches your level, the order simply rests in the order book until it expires or you cancel it. Traders often call resting limit orders passive orders, since they add depth to the book rather than removing it. Partial fills are common in thin markets.
