Memecoin
FundamentalsA memecoin is a token driven by community attention rather than fundamentals: highly volatile, thinly traded and a frequent wrapper for scams.
Definition
A memecoin, sometimes written meme coin, is a cryptocurrency whose value comes almost entirely from community attention, humour and social media momentum rather than from a product, revenue or technical claim. Most are launched quickly on an existing chain using standard token contracts, often with enormous supplies and no roadmap beyond the joke. Because there is little underneath to value, prices move with hype cycles and can fall as fast as they rise, and thin liquidity means even moderate orders move the market. Memecoins are also a common wrapper for rug pulls, insider allocations, contracts that block selling, and airdrop scams that ask for token approvals. Checking holder distribution, liquidity and contract permissions matters more here than any marketing claim.
