Privacy Coin

Fundamentals

A privacy coin hides sender, receiver or amount on-chain using tools like ring signatures and zero-knowledge proofs, and often faces exchange delistings.

Definition

A privacy coin, also called an anonymity-enhanced cryptocurrency, is a coin designed to hide transaction details that are public by default on chains like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Depending on the protocol it may obscure the sender, the receiver, the amount, or all three, using techniques such as ring signatures, stealth addresses and zero-knowledge proofs. The goal is fungibility: if coins carry no traceable history, no unit can be treated as tainted. That same property makes privacy coins awkward for regulated businesses, and many exchanges in strict jurisdictions have delisted them or restricted deposits to meet travel-rule and screening obligations. Privacy is also not absolute, since implementation flaws, exchange records and careless use of on- and off-ramps can still expose users.
