Source of Funds

Regulation

The evidence a regulated firm collects about where a particular sum came from. Distinct from source of wealth, and often asked for after the deposit.

Definition

Source of funds is the evidence a regulated firm collects about where a specific sum came from, as distinct from source of wealth, which concerns how a customer's overall assets were accumulated. It is why a platform can ask for payslips, a sale contract, a tax return or an explanation of a transfer before releasing a withdrawal or lifting a limit, and why those requests often arrive after money has been deposited rather than before. The trigger is usually a threshold, a pattern that does not match the account's declared profile, or an incoming transfer whose on-chain history the firm's screening flagged. Almost everything else varies: which documents are accepted, how long a review takes, and whether an account is restricted while it runs are matters of the firm's own policy and its supervisor's expectations. Anticipating the request, and keeping records of purchases and transfers as they happen, is the only part of it a customer controls.
