Market Cap and Supply, Explained

Why a coin's unit price tells you nothing, what market cap actually measures, and the supply figures that quietly change the answer.

"This coin is only $0.002 — imagine if it reached $1" is one of the most persistent bad arguments in crypto. Unit price on its own carries no information at all. What matters is how many units exist, and how many more are coming.

What market cap actually is

Market capitalisation is the current price multiplied by the circulating supply. It answers a narrow question: what would every circulating unit be worth at today's price? That makes it useful for comparing scale between assets, because it puts a coin priced at fractions of a cent and one priced in thousands of dollars on the same axis.

Why unit price is meaningless alone

A coin at $0.002 with a trillion units in circulation is already larger than a coin at $200 with a million units. Price per unit is simply the market cap divided by however many pieces the supply was cut into, and projects can and do choose that number arbitrarily. Comparing two coins by their unit prices is like comparing two companies by their share prices while ignoring how many shares exist.

The supply figures that matter

Circulating supply is what is available and moving today. Total supply includes units that exist but are locked, reserved or not yet released. Maximum supply is the hard ceiling, where one exists at all. The gap between circulating and total is a dilution schedule: if most of the supply is still locked and unlocks over the next two years, existing holders will be diluted as it arrives, regardless of anything else.

Where the numbers mislead

Market cap assumes every unit could be sold at the current price, which is never true — thin order books mean large sales move the price against the seller. "Fully diluted valuation" prices in supply that does not exist yet, and can look alarming or reassuring depending on the unlock timeline behind it. Reported circulating supply is also self-declared by many projects.

Key takeaway

The bottom line

Always read price, circulating supply and unlock schedule together. Any one of them alone can be made to tell almost any story.
