Chain Split

Fundamentals

Chain split explained: when a hard fork permanently divides a blockchain into two coins, plus the replay, exchange and scam risks for holders.

Definition

A chain split is what happens when a fork becomes permanent and one blockchain turns into two, each with its own rules, community and coin. Both chains share an identical history up to the split block, so anyone holding the original coin at that height ends up with a balance on both sides. After that point the ledgers diverge, and a transaction on one chain has no effect on the other. Several practical hazards follow. Exchanges may pause deposits and withdrawals around a split; replay protection may be missing, so a transaction broadcast on one chain can be replayed on the other; and scam sites offer to claim split coins in exchange for your seed phrase. Never share a seed phrase to claim anything.
