Wallet Firmware Update

Firmware is the software running on a hardware wallet itself, and an update replaces it. Updates matter because they carry security fixes and support for new signing formats, and a device left several versions behind may not be able to display what a transaction actually does — which is the whole reason the device exists. They are also the moment of greatest exposure, because installing firmware is the one routine operation that writes new code into the thing holding your keys. The protection is that reputable devices verify a cryptographic signature from the manufacturer before accepting an image, and refuse anything unsigned; that check happens on the device, not in the application on the computer. The practical rules follow: update through the manufacturer's own application obtained by a route you established, never from a link in a message or a pop-up; expect the device to ask for confirmation on its own screen; and have the recovery phrase available beforehand, since some updates reset the device. A genuine update never asks for a recovery phrase to be typed into a computer.
